As an avid off-road enthusiast, I am always on the lookout for ways to enhance my vehicle’s capabilities. When it came to improving the off-road performance of my Toyota Prado, I decided to invest in a Dobinsons lift kit. In this review blog post, I will share my first-hand experience with this lift kit, highlighting its features, performance, and the impact it had on my off-road adventures. Join me as we dive into the world of the Dobinsons and discover how it transformed my Prado into a better off-road machine.

A Little Background

I’ve been waiting for an excuse to spend my hard earned money on a lift kit and the Prado’s 11 year old stock suspension finally gave way after 150,000 kms and 12 years, out of which, I drove 50,000 kms over the last 2 years.

I considered 3 to 4 local (UAE) competitors before making a decision, the factors were; price, first hand reviews, reliability/durability, stiffness/comfort, load capacities, warranty and ease of warranty claims. After my research, Dobinsons was the clear winner for my purposes in all categories which justified its higher price point (about 15% higher than similar brands available in the UAE).

So far, the Prado is stock except for -15 backspaced wheels from an FJ Cruiser, an 8mm aluminum front skid plate and 4 mm steel rear skid plate. The lift kit would be affected by the heavier front by about 20-25kgs and the handling was already bit more planted on the ground with the wider stance.

Enhanced Performance

My first impressions of the Dobinsons Lift Kit on the drive out of the workshop was a big improvement in the performance on-road. Accelerating, braking, speed bumps and cornering were the big ‘wow’ moments as they felt more tuned in and responsive.

With the added 2-inch lift, I gained increased ground clearance, reclaimed from the 1.5 inches lost with the front skid plate (the front skid plate below the front diff is still the lowest point on my Prado).

I could feel the suspension articulation while off-roading and providing better wheel travel, ensuring my tires remained in contact with the ground for improved traction and stability.

Ride Comfort and Handling

A standout feature Dobinsons claims is their ability to enhance ride comfort. My mechanic was adamant on prioritising comfort as 90% of this vehicle’s usage is on road (genuine advise as he doesn’t have any commissions or link to this purchase).

My off-road adventures often involve bumpy corrugations and tight approach and departure angles on dunes. The lift kit absorbed shocks while approaching dunes head on at high speeds and the vibrations on dirt roads were acceptable.

I’m hoping that the lift kit will settle after a bit of use as the corrugations were a bit rougher than I’m used to (stay tuned for the 6 month update).

Built to Last

Durability was a crucial factor for me when choosing a lift kit. I wanted to invest in a high-quality construction and materials that would last me at least a couple of years before getting worn out. The Dobinson’s components were a big selling point as well as a 2 year warranty while competing brands offered 1 year.

After getting a decent a look and feel, the workmanship was a quality job well done on the product and installation. There were no leaks of loose parts after a shakedown off-roading trip, so far so good!

Straightforward Installation Process

For those with access to your own tools and have a mechanical inclination, the installation should be straightforward.

In the UAE, labor rates for installation are affordable. Secondly, I preferred Dobinsons do the installation as they know their own product and would be easier to make a warranty claim incase anything goes wrong.

The geometry alignment was done in a shop that has computers linked up to sensors – I recommend the DIY installers do the same for the best outcome.

Value for Money

Considering factors like improved performance, ride comfort, and durability, the Dobinsons lift provides excellent value for money.

Tip: make sure to check that the list of parts on your order matches your vehicle and confirm whether bump stops are included. My mistake was assuming the bump stops were a part of the lift kit but they are an additional part added on your request.

It is competitively priced (slightly more expensive than competing mid-range lift kits on the market), making it a cost-effective solution for enhancing your 4×4’s off-road capabilities without compromising on quality. The peace of mind it brings is well worth the investment.

Conclusion

My first-hand experience with the Dobinsons lift kit for my Toyota Prado 120 has been nothing short of exceptional. It has transformed my Prado into a better off-road machine (looks gorgeous as well), allowing me to confidently take on new heights and push the limits of adventure.

With its enhanced performance, ride comfort, durability, bolt-on installation process, this lift kit has exceeded my expectations. Not to mention a great customer service team at Dobinsons.

If you are looking to elevate your off-road adventures and unlock the true potential of your 4×4, I highly recommend considering Dobinsons.
